SLS offers the use of a 5.8 Hectare non tidal wet basin which opens directly to the River Mersey. The entrance gateway is 42.6m wide, while the sill is 2.55m below chart datum giving some 12.5m water depth during average spring high tides.
There is also the facility for the water depth in the basin to be both increased and decreased as required.

Three quays provide repair and cranage facilities. The basin quay lengths are:
north 285m, south 305m and west 271m. Furthermore, the north wall is built on a rock foundation and can accept pedestal loadings from a 1,000T mobile crane.
This has been specifically designed in order to facilitate the loading out of structures up to 1000T.

The unique design of the wet basin and graving dock allows heavy floating cranes to lift structures of up to 2000T from the wet basin into the No 7 graving dock.
